“Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.” – Henry David Thoreau

I love this quote because I’ve experienced this myself and I’ve had the honor of being on the lost path with clients who begin to understand themselves better. It always leads to more wisdom, so this quote by Aristotle is another favorite:

“Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Aristotle

It’s only recently that I recognized the immense value of all the extensive training classes and work that I did in my twenties and thirties to understand more about myself and how others behave as part of the corporate benefits I received. It happened recently because now I’m facilitating workshops and giving one on one coaching and realize that not everyone has had these gifts of self awareness and learning for the past twenty plus years and even if they did get some of it, they didn’t take it and expand on it like I did to continue my growth and understanding.

It’s not that I’m any better, it’s just one of my “things” that gets me excited, I love learning more about what makes people tick and behave the way they do and how to bring out their best. It’s one of the reasons I left my corporate job to become a coach, I realized that I was spending my spare time learning more about leadership and personal development, so how could I get paid to do what I was doing just for fun?

So, here I am, loving every minute of this work I get to do in helping others become more self aware and find their way to getting lost and then understanding more.  It’s especially fun for me when I get to learn a new tool of self discovery.
